Not your everyday comic book, that is!No, it's not even a comic book. Professor John Boyer [aka Plaid Avenger] has written a very succinct and compelling textbook that pretty much covers what is going in the world and why. It is The Book on the global current events. I am not going to write a long review, since most of others reviews here have done fairly good job at that, especially the reviews coming from students of his class. In our flawed education system, knowledge of foreigners is almost non- existent, and this books does everything it can to correct that.
Because the writing style is not of some high dry septuagenarian professor, even high schoolers can benefit very much from this text. And because it is so full facts and up to date info on current events and provides reasoning about why and how some things are happening in today's globalized world [globalization is one of the underlying themes], I can very easily see this book used as a complementary or even as major text in a humanities class or even a political science class [even graduate ?].
Definitely a must buy, especially for American students.

Out of 17 years of public education, John Boyer had the greatest influence on my learning ability.
He actually made learning fun. Now I learn in my free time, and I owe most of it to John Boyer. He is one of the only professors who actually dedicates time to making learning fun.
Boyer teaches his World Regions geography class in McBryde 100, which seats over 500 students. If you get to class late, you better find a spot in the aisle or standing room in the back because a handful of students who aren't even registered for the class will be in your seat.
I took the class a few years ago, but I still remember Boyer's key points, and I thank him today for bringing a worldwide social awareness to the students at Virginia Tech. When I took the class, we didn't have this book, but I would do anything to get a copy of it.
Why can't I buy it on ? Bring it BACK!
The Plaid Avenger really does break the textbook mold. Most of the time, I try to read my textbooks, and end up falling asleep at my desk. This book, however, is incredibly informative about the world we live in, and manages to keep the reader awake, paying attention, and even laughing. So what if there are a few expletives and references to alcohol? This is a book that will actually be read by students, and will provide a much-needed understanding of the world as they prepare to go out into it. I know I won't be selling back my copy after exams...
At the end of every semester, a student is as burnt out as can be. Hopefully that is from studying, and not recreational activities, but he's burnt out nonetheless. Time to load up the 88 LeSabre and head back home for Christmas break. Those gas prices are rising, and the wallet is as thin as can be.
Ah, time to sell back those awful textbooks and make a little cash for the road. Maybe the student is from Jersey and the trip home involves a detour in AC and all you need is a little more cash to scrounge up to put down on the tables. You start packing up a cardboard box to swing by the bookstore on the way out of town.
Engineering Fundamentals....in the box
Calc 2.....in the box
Physical Geology......in the box
Sociology.....in the box...then out of the box and into the garbage.
Plaid Avenger's world....in the box but it doesn't feel quite right.
( Come-on man that's two hands of black jack....SELL IT)
You get to the book store and start selling them all back and just before the cashier rings up Plaid Avenger's world you catch a glimpse of Kim Jong Il and you can't help but laugh. Not because you think back to your knowledge of him as a puppet in a silly movie by those South Park guys, but because you really know what he's about now. You've been through World Regions. You can probably visualize his state's Population Pyramid.
Just then you change your mind. "I'm sorry ma'am, I think I'll keep that one."
You can always hit the tables on the way back to school with Grandma's Christmas check.

Bottom line, John's book is not just the best text book this year...it is the best text book I've ever seen. The text appeals to all, while providing the robust geographic and geo-political foundation any college graduate should be mandated to possess. Apparently there are a few people that are up in arms because there's a few curses here, a couple of references to alcohol there....Some are even offended that the Plaid Avenger doesn't wear a proper bow-tie! To these folks I say there's a plot of land in Tennessee that is just right for you; no fancy-color-print book pages there, just the right citizenry to make you feel at home as you lobby to get the Butler Act reinstated.
Was very cheap and informative. The book was required for my college class, and I have learned lots from it. I love the style of writing.
If all history books or classrooms were like this book....we would not be a nation of people not knowing what is happening.
If you are taking world regions with John Boyer, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK (used). There is an access code that you will need in order to register with the class's website and a used book means a used access code and no access for you. Buying new is not a problem.
This is the most wonderful textbook I have ever read. I will keep mine forever as it is highly informative and hilarious at the same time. Boyer and the Plaid Avenger make learning about the world fun.
This was a book required for a college course! BEST ever (and so was the instructor)! I am in love with this book and so is everyone who comes in my home and picks it up! I'm ordering another updated version because my 2 year old ripped out some pages ( anyhow, the book will literally have you laughing out loud and in shock by the wit! each chapter covers a country and has a fun cocktail recipe to honor. Love it, love it, and Love it!!! Great gift idea as well )
